ENGLISH LANGUAGE CHALLENGES

Imagen
The truth is that before starting English 4 I was a little scared. I'm a little insecure and I thought it could be a bad experience. However, throughout the semester I enjoyed many entertaining topics. I've always thought that learning English in a classroom, practicing only one day a week, and trying to talk to people who don’t really speak English (except the Professor and some classmates), isn’t a very good idea. I hope someday to live in a country where I have to speak English obligatorily. The classes of this course have been really very entertaining, and I have learned a lot. Anyway, I can’t speak fluently. I think writing is one of the skills I use best, but speaking English costs me a lot. And listening to English ..... uffff is the hardest thing for me. My only way to try to improve this is to watch many movies in English and listen to a lot of music in English too, trying to pay attention to the words, pronunciation, and ideas . I had to take...

CHANGES TO MY STUDY PROGRAMME

Imagen
This is my perfect opportunity to destroy this career!! Hahahahahaha It's just a joke. The truth is that Social Work has been an interesting option as professional training. The academic formation has had a very high level. However, I feel that the years of study could be reduced. I have no idea how this reduction can be achieved, since the number of courses in each semester would have to be reduced. Anyway, I would make the following changes: - We would not only have English classes. Each student would have to choose another alternative language during their 4 year career (yes!, only 4 years would last the career). I recommend two languages in particular: Portuguese, considering that Brazil is probably the country with the most influence in Social Work today; and Mapudungun, because it is fundamental to study the language of the Mapuche people if we intend to contribute to the resolution of the conflicts of this people as social workers.        ...

GIVING OPINIONS

For me, public transportation must be free. I've thought about this a couple of times, and I think I have a good argument. Consider only Santiago de Chile, the city that mobilizes most people in the country. People are transported every day by metro or by bus to do three main things: 1) people travel by public transport to work; 2) people travel by public transport to study (in the case of younger people); 3) People travel by public transport to go buy / pay something. There are very few people who travel to visit someone, or because they go for a walk. So, if the vast majority of people go to work at a company where it contributes to increase the capital and money of an entrepreneur, or travel to study so that tomorrow have a good profession and also contribute to maintaining the labor system, or go directly to buy or pay your outstanding bills, then ... why, in addition to all this, should you pay for your ticket? We pay to go to work to increase the earnings o...

Postgraduate studies (LATE)

Imagen
At this point in my life, it's no surprise that I want to continue studying something related to music. First, I wanted to study an undergraduate, maybe “pedagogy in Music”, but along the days I have been understanding that I want to study singing, specifically. I consider myself a shy person, but I have the conviction that practice makes master. I feel that singing is a tool that has an infinity of benefits, but I rescue mainly two: it makes us safer people of ourselves, and allows us to have closeness with other people. This can be a very useful tool as a social work professional. For example, through singing, people deprived of their liberty can express the most intimate of their thoughts and feelings. Singing gives us the possibility of being an artistic character, but at the same time, of putting our voices at the service of emotions. Studying singing is one of the first things I will do once I finish my undergraduate studies in social work. I hope to study...

MY FAVOURITE TV SERIES!

Imagen
Is time to talk about Slam Dunk. This is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue about a basketball team from Shohoku High School. It was serialized from 1990 to 1996. It was adapted into an anime series by Toei Animation. I always have practiced sports, and I loved the realism with which life happens in this series. For example, teammates fight each other in games; some players are injured and must be replaced; sometimes the matches are about to be lost, but they go back at the last minute; and a series of things that really happens in sports of this kind. The protagonist is Hanamichi Sakuragi, and he has a very special personality. He is a beginner in this sport, but he is convinced that he is the most talented player in the world. As the story progresses, Hanamichi learns many lessons for his life. There is a very special scene in which Mitsui - the former No. 1 player in Japan - is turned into a delinquent and returns to the...

MY FUTURE JOB

Imagen
I’m studying to become a social worker. It has been a long, difficult road; full of difficulties but also very enriching. I have learnt many lessons for my life. However, I must be honest. I can’t imagine myself working on something that I don’t feel any passion. Whatever I do, it has to have music and sports in it. I have thought about this a couple of times, and it really makes me feel like being at a crossroads. Why am I studying Social Work then? I decided to study social work because I wanted to transform society. It is a truly beautiful career; I can make a living, and help other people too. I believe I will be able to achieve it. So in order to make it possible, generating a different worldview is necessary. And the best thing about this, is that Social Work allows me to integrate other disciplines and knowledge to enrich the tasks of the profession (especially sports and music). Going to the subject of my future work, I would like to work on someth...

Are you into social media??

Imagen
Well, it’s something that can’t be ignored: social networks are so entertaining that they often consume people's lives. I have mixed opinions about social networks. A part of me hates them. I find them strange (truly, the people are strange…) I hate that people expose their lives so easily in them. For example, I always find on facebook the time a person got up, what breakfast he had, the friends he called, the places he visited, the clothes he wore, etc. And even worse is instagram. I hate that weird thing about "my story". It was one of the reasons that made me close instagram. However, I find that social networks are useful for communicating quickly. That's why my favorite social network is whatssap. I find that it’s easy to use and very useful network. It’s an instant chat that allows to communicate with people from all the world at any time, and where if people are intelligent, they can occupy with discretion. I like facebook, but I also like ...

THE BEST CONCERT EVER!

Imagen
The best concert I was in was the WOMAD. This super concert was between February 16 and 18 in Recoleta, Santiago, Chile. This festival lasted 3 days and had many spectacular things. All along the day, different workshops were performed : circus, poetry, afro-colombian dance, world cinemas, Andean dance, Madagascar music, vertical gardens, mural painting, song composition, etc. The atmosphere was incredible: complete families, children, seniors, men, women of all ages. Everyone enjoyed an excellent family atmosphere to the beat of beautiful music. Best of all: three stages where artists from the entire world played music of many musical styles.   In my memory I keep some of the artists I saw: - The excellent Chilean group “Congreso”. - Le vent du Nord: a Canadian group, in which a woman sang with an incredibly beautiful voice. - Vocals Sampling: this group drove me crazy! Are six Cuban men who played many songs (“Hotel california” (The...

A country I'd like to visit: the land of Latin American Superstar!!

Hello class. I’m here again…writing for English 4, the last subject of this adventure. Well, I’d like to visit Mexico. And not only visit it. I want to live there for some time. Perhaps one or two semesters. The first reason why I want to live there, is because I want to study music. Some time ago, I didn’t like the Mexican musicians. Truly, I hadn’t the provision to hear Mexican music…. Through the years (and the partys…) I began to hear “Corridos Mexicanos”. In this way, I started to get to know Antonio Aguilar, José Alfredo Jiménez, Vicente Fernández, and the great Chavela Vargas. I thinked “Wow!...one more time the life showed me I made a big mistake: before, I laughed at these songs; now, I really appreciate the voices of the singers, and their musical quality. At this moment, all was in order. But I really loved the Mexican music when I heard these two monsters of world music: Juan Gabriel and Luis Miguel hahahahahaha. I know that people make critics about these artists, but...

READY TO ENGLISH 4!!

Imagen
For the last time I am here writing. Beyond all the prejudices I had, English 3 was a good subject and I learned a lot more than I expected. He always thought that there is not a good system to try to learn English in a classroom where everyone speaks Spanish, but I do rescue many things unthinkable for me. The first thing is to have the opportunity to write and practice English about the topics of interest to me. That makes the subject much more dynamic and enjoyable for everyone. Before taking this course, I had forgotten many English words that I find really beautiful. Thanks to English 3 I have been able to practice, even a little, the English that I like so much and that I forgot so much. Maybe in the future it will be a good instance, being able to really converse with people who speak English in a natural way. It would be interesting to know other visions about education, about careers, about our disciplines, and about life itself, making it arrive through real commu...

ORCHESTRA, STRINGS, AND WINGS WORKSHOP.

Imagen
Hello, class. I’m here again. This semester has been very difficult for me. For first time in my years of University I registered 7 subjects. The contents that we have reviewed have been very interesting for me. This semester I learned too much information. In this fourth year, my career (social work) has started to become in something more similar to what I imagined before entering. In the first year, the subjects were about general formation in philosophy, sociology, or history. Now, we have reviewed information about social policies, different form of inequality, the multidimensionality of poverty, and social movements. Beyond all these aspects, I loved a special subject of this semester: Orchestra, strings, and wings workshop. Each session the teacher brings musical scores to practice. I am playing trumpet. He lent me a trumpet and sometimes makes me personal classes. This is wonderful for me! In other post I told my history with the musical instruments. To have the opportu...

THE HISTORY OF MY MUSIC DREAMS

Imagen
Hello, classmates. Today I'm going to talk about the history of my music dreams!! When I was child, I began to play the guitar looking at my father. I think that I don't play very well, but I enjoy too much doing this. When I grew up, I started to play latin percusions (timbals, congas, güiro) "taking classes" with youtube videos, but at this time, my obsession was to sing. Then, I began to sing, although I still think that my voice isn't very tuned. With part of my family and with some friends, we formed a Classic Rock band. We covered songs like "Highway Star" (Deep Purple), "The Ocean" (Led Zeppelin), "Bark at the moon" (Ozzy Osbourne), etc. I think that this project was a disaster, but when we talk about this time with my family and friends, we  always    rebember it with much happiness.  After that, we met the key of success: the CUMBIA. Then, we turned round to this "new" musical style. I played timbals, and made sec...

Youtube and Audiomusica

Imagen
Well. I will talk about two websites that I really enjoy to much. The first, is  youtube  (www.youtube.com). I started to use this site in 2006, because a dear cousin showed me this site. We have seen many videos on it, about music and football, principally. With the time, I have found the most incredible information of the internet: I began to play Timbals by toutube, and I have learned some of music too. Sometimes, before an evaluation, me and my classmates look for vídeos on youtube where teachers of all the world teach us the things that we need. To learn about music on youtube has its cost: after to know a new musical instrument, I want to have it! It's a great problem, cause i'm a student, and haven't to much money to buy it. I think that to play music in this country is really expensive. The pr ice s of the musicals instruments are so high truely. In spite of that, I like to see this prices in a specifical shop, called  Audiomusica . For this reason, I a...

Quinta Show is a band started by my brother Juan Pablo (on the right, with a blue guitar), by Roberto (next to my brother, playing that "strange" instrument called  Baby Bass ), and by me, using sunglasses, playing timbals in the background). In this group also touches my dad (to the far left, playing that black guitar). The other members are David on keyboards, Carolina in  güira  and choirs, Agustín in the voice, and Gerardo in the congas (he is behind my brother). It is a family group, where friendship and fun is the best thing. We usually get together to play various musical styles at least two days a week. This photo was taken in 2013 by Valentina (David's girlfriend, our keyboardist) during a party at the Law School of the University of Chile, in the year 2013. It is a very important photo for me, since it is a great record where my father, my brother, me and my friends, are doing what we most like to do: to play music. That day was really beautiful and people lov...

Remenbering good times!!

I want tell you about Brazil. In 2014, I had the opportunity to visit Rio do Janeiro. My brother, my cousin, and me, were going to the football world cup. We loved this city! The first thing that we did, was to go to Copacabana, an amazing beach with precious palms, vast miles of beautiful sea, and the best of all, many friendly people. The Brazilian men and women are the nicest people that I have known. They invited us to their houses and wanted to celebrate with us in the street drinking some beers.  For them, the football world cup has been for always a very important party. I think that in Rio, the mix of football and music produce in Brazilian people happiness with no equal. Maybe the mixture of those things made Brazil, and Rio especially, my favorite place to visit. Walking on the principal Copacabana street (I don’t remember its name), we saw the most extraordinary things. There was a great Batucada where many people played theirs musical instruments. We also saw m...

Blog Session 2 Instructions: Why I chose my career

Imagen
First, I wanted to study psychology, but my PSU score... you know jajaja...then I entered to study social work. I chose my career because since I was child one of my obsessions was to know prisons. I want to use music in the social reintegration of people who are imprisoned. I also chose social work because I think that I'm good solving problems, and I can to do a lot of that as a social worker. I can use my creativity in many areas of the social work profession. The Social Workers help people in their life’s most difficult challenges: poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, unemployment, educational problems, etc. Also, with our salary we can become billionaires .... jajajaja

My name is Gabriel. I'm 27 years-old and live in Quinta Normal in Santiago. I was born on September 15, 1990.  I'm attending the third year of Social Work career. It isn't my first career: before I studied Law and Literature for a couple of years. Before, I studied my elementary studies in a school called Salvador Sanfuentes, and after that, when I was 12, I studied my secundary studies in the Instituto Nacional. Beyond the academic, I would like to mention  two activities that I really love: music, and sports. About music, I play many instruments, but I don't think i'm very talented. Sometimes, I sing too. Anyway, music is the most important activity that am doing in this time. And about football, every weeks I practice two or three days. I have made many friends practicing this sport. I would like to play it all the life. We're a five-member family: my parents Juan and Raquel, my brother Juan Pablo and his daughter Martina, and I. My brother is three yea...
